Salzkammergut Nativity Scenes

In Strobl and St. Gilgen, you can experience this tradition, which is particularly vibrant in the Salzkammergut region, and also learn lots of interesting facts about the history of Christmas cribs and crib building. In St. Gilgen, master crib builder Sepp Winkler exhibits his most beautiful works in the Salettl at the Hotel Post. Whether traditional or oriental, large or small – each nativity scene is rich in detail and has its own special characteristics – every nativity scene is guaranteed to be unique.

The nativity village of Strobl awaits you with Salzkammergut nativity scenes and treasures built by the children of Strobl Primary School. This year, you can admire the nativity scenes made by the children from roots, moss and clay figures, as well as the Salzkammergut nativity scenes, in the shop windows of Strobl. Each nativity scene tells several stories. 

A special highlight: the Schmidt nativity scene with over 400 hand-carved and hand-painted figures. It has a place of honour on the Strobl lake promenade.
